 AGUNG ‘AUGUN’ PRABOWO

Agung “AGUN” Prabowo (b. 1985, Indonesia) graduated from The Faculty of Fine Arts and Design at The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 2005, where he majored in Printmaking and has since built a strong background in his discipline of printmaking. He has come to be widely known for his distinctive style of highly complex linocut works that transcends personal narratives. Agung's use of hieroglyphs-like symbols from elements of everyday life, psychedelic colours, and smooth gradation, come together in engaging prints that are like polyphonic poems of meaning. His works delve into the human condition and explore universal emotions. Recording his personal life experiences into his art, he often translates negative emotions into positive works of beauty through a repetitive, mantra-like printing process that is akin to a spiritual prayer or mantra.

His works of expressive symbolism skilfully printed in contrasting colours has led him to first place at The 4th Indonesia Graphic Arts Triennale. Some of his solo exhibitions include the most recent Molasses, Mizuma Gallery, Singapore (2017), Printing Life in the Cosmos, Vinyl on Vinyl, Manila, Philippines (2016), We Went Wild, Krack Studio, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2015), Unguarded Guards, Jogja Contemporary, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2015), and Natural Mystic, Bentara Budaya Jakarta, Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta, Bentara Budaya Bali, and Balai Soedjatmoko Solo, Indonesia (2013). He has been in group exhibitions in various countries such as Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Japan. He has been awarded the Young Artist Award at Art|Jog|14, Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2014, 3 Best Artworks at the Jogja Miniprint Biennale 2014, Museum Bank Indonesia and Mien Gallery, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (2014), and First Place Award at the Trienale Seni Grafis Indonesia IV 2012, Bentara Budaya Jakarta, Bentara Budaya Yogyakarta, Bentara Budaya Bali, and Balai Soedjatmoko Solo, Indonesia in 2012. Agung lives and works in Bandung, Indonesia.
